Lloyd’s List Intelligence (LLI) has introduced a new capability called Satellite Confirmed Spoofing on its maritime information platform named Seasearcher. This new capability connects AIS fraud detection with automated verification of satellite images, assisting Compliance, Risk, and Intelligence teams in identifying fraudulent behaviors of vessels with greater confidence.

Increased Demand for Reliable Information

The introduction of this new capability reflects the growing demand for defensible information that helps maritime organizations prioritize their investigations and strengthen Compliance processes. This system aids in evidence-based decision-making.

Changing Fraud Detection Methods

Arne Staal, Head of Research at Lloyd’s List Intelligence, stated: "Maritime fraud methods have gone beyond simply turning off transponders. Vessels seeking to evade scrutiny broadcast fake positions that appear completely legitimate." He added: "We have been identifying this behavior for some time, but detection models are inherently probabilistic. Now we can transition our users from identifying potential fraud events to confirming these events using satellite images."

This new capability allows Compliance teams, insurers, and regulatory bodies to move from inference to independent evidence, enabling them to act decisively based on what the images show.

Facilitating the Identification of Maritime Fraud Methods

Satellite Confirmed Spoofing is designed to support Lloyd’s List Intelligence's mission to transition customers from risk inference signals to confirmed events. By combining maritime expertise, advanced analytics, and satellite technology, identifying maritime fraud methods and understanding the evidence behind them becomes easier.
