KONGSBERG has successfully signed a contract to supply a marine traffic services (VTS) system with Ports Pilbara in Australia. This contract includes the provision of a complete VTS system that encompasses radar, electro-optical sensors, automatic identification technology for vessels (AIS), and VHF communications.

Contract Details

This contract is for a duration of 10 years as a system-as-a-service, and KONGSBERG will not only supply the new system for Port Hedland but will also provide comprehensive maintenance and support services for the existing VTS at Dampier Port.

Emphasis on Collaboration with Ports Pilbara

Len Westerlund, CEO of Kongsberg Norcontrol, expressed happiness over KONGSBERG's re-selection by Ports Pilbara, stating: "We are honored to be chosen as a supplier once again and will provide services to Port Hedland based on the VTS and management services we previously provided to Dampier Port. We will continue to support safe and efficient port operations and strengthen our collaboration with Ports Pilbara."

Increase in Marine Traffic Volume at Port Hedland

Samuel McSkimming, CEO of Ports Pilbara, stated that the high volume of vessel activity at Port Hedland has created the need for a strong and reliable VTS system that can accurately track vessel movements across the service area and support efficient turnaround times.

He added: "This system will provide port operators with advanced tools to monitor vessel movements within our area of responsibility, improve situational awareness, and support safe and efficient operations. We were also looking for a long-term technology partner, and we have found that in KONGSBERG."

Performance of Pilbara Ports

In the 2025-2026 financial year, Ports Pilbara recorded a record 804.1 million tons of imports and exports through the Ashburton, Dampier, Port Hedland, and Varanus Island ports. Ports Pilbara is responsible for managing these ports, marine traffic services, vessel scheduling, berthing allocations for multi-user facilities, and port communications.

The contract value has not been disclosed.
