Jennifer Jordan-Saifi, CEO of the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), at the Oslo Ocean Days conference, emphasized the need for progress in carbon reduction and addressed the challenges facing the maritime transport industry. In this conference, held for the first time at the historic "Gamle Logen," she pointed out the importance of addressing climate change and the necessity for immediate action in this regard.
The Need for Immediate Action in the Maritime Transport Industry
Jordan-Saifi stated, "We need to talk about these issues," expressing her concerns over the lack of progress in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. She reminded that despite the passage of years, we are still not witnessing significant changes in this industry, and for this reason, the private sector must lead these changes.

She also mentioned the lack of clear and common frameworks in the maritime transport industry, saying, "Despite the existing political and economic challenges, we must move towards progress. We do not have much time!" Jordan-Saifi also referred to the willingness and genuine commitment of private transport companies to strive for sustainability, describing it as a positive sign.
Opportunities and Challenges in Carbon Reduction
The CEO of SMI pointed out that the maritime transport industry needs to focus on international investments in future fuels, technology, and fuel supply. She said, "We must move towards clean solutions, such as small modular reactors (SMRs) that can help reduce carbon impacts."
Jordan-Saifi also referred to recent investments in fuels such as ammonia, adding, "Dual-fuel ships and those with greater flexibility in energy combinations are wise choices. It seems that currently none of the options alone are sufficient." With an optimistic outlook for the future, she emphasized the importance of paying attention to consumer opinions and their demand for sustainable supply chains.
Overall, Jennifer Jordan-Saifi, emphasizing the importance of progress in the maritime transport industry, called on all stakeholders to move towards solutions instead of focusing on problems and to seek to create a sustainable future.
