Italy, as one of the key countries in the energy industry in Europe, has recently held a meeting aimed at discussing the increase of fuel production in its refineries. Scheduled for October 8, this meeting will see Adolfo Urso, Italy's Minister of Industry, and Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Minister of Environment and Energy Security, meet with managers from Italy's refining industry. The purpose of this session is to discuss and exchange ideas on possible solutions to increase diesel and gasoline production in order to reduce fuel prices in the country.

Rising fuel prices in Italy

In recent weeks, gasoline and diesel prices in Italy have surged significantly, with the average gasoline price reaching €2.14 per liter, equivalent to nearly $10 per gallon. Diesel prices have also risen considerably due to global crude oil price increases and global fuel supply issues, making them significantly higher than gasoline. These problems, alongside the global diesel supply crisis, have posed serious challenges for Italy.

Actions by the Italian government

The Italian government, led by Giorgia Meloni, has so far spent about €3 billion (equivalent to $3.4 billion) to finance several rounds of tax and duty reductions on fuel. These measures have been taken to alleviate pressure on consumers and support the domestic economy against fluctuations in the global market. However, rising prices in many European markets, including Italy, have reached unprecedented levels, with Italy alongside other major European economies like Germany and France witnessing the highest diesel prices.

Refinery capacity constraints in the Middle East due to Iranian attacks on refineries and limited fuel flow from the Strait of Hormuz, which is significantly less than crude oil shipments, have also exacerbated existing problems. Additionally, Russia's refining capacity has been severely reduced due to drone attacks by Ukraine on Russian refineries. Russia has banned diesel exports until the end of September, and this ban is likely to continue until the end of October.

The unprecedented rise in gasoline and diesel prices in European markets has pushed consumers towards low-emission vehicles. According to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), sales of battery electric vehicles in Europe, including in the UK, Switzerland, and Norway, increased by 52.2% in August compared to last year. This trend indicates significant changes in consumer choices due to price pressures in the fuel market.
