The daily crude oil production capacity of the country has been upgraded from 3 million and 430 thousand barrels in September 2023 to 3 million and 715 thousand barrels in October 2025. This dynamism reflects the return of 285,000 barrels of new capacity, equivalent to an 8.3 percent operational leap.

Production and Investment Trends

In October 2025, crude oil production achieved a daily growth of 55,000 barrels compared to the same month in 2024. The strategic focus of executive actions during this period has been on optimizing surface facilities and reviving idle assets. Activating existing reserves and restoring low-yield wells are among the actions taken in this regard.

Development of Joint Fields in West Karun

In this context, a rapid plan for a 250,000-barrel increase in crude oil production has been initiated with an investment package of 3 billion dollars. This project has so far stabilized a yield of 70,000 barrels per day from its targets. The financial structure of this project has been established with an 80 percent participation from the National Development Fund and a 20 percent share from the internal resources of the National Iranian Oil Company.

The upstream oil sector has also witnessed the approval of large development packages worth approximately 13 billion euros in renowned and joint fields including Azadegan, Azar, Changuleh, and Band-e-Karkheh. With the signing of new contracts amounting to 315,000 barrels per day, the ceiling for outsourced processing capacity to the private sector has reached a record 430,000 barrels per day.

On the drilling front, 129 drilling rigs are operating around the clock, and the drilling of 270 new wells is underway.

Future Challenges and Sustainable Strategies

Energy experts believe that maintaining the record of 3.7 million barrels is a more complex challenge than initially achieving it. Naturally, the country's hydrocarbon reservoirs face an annual production decline of between 8 to 10 percent, and to maintain existing capacity, the oil industry must create approximately 300,000 barrels of new compensatory capacity each year.

Innovative solutions for enhanced oil recovery and the collection of associated gases as sustainable resources for supplying feedstock to petrochemical units and maintaining the gas network in winter are being pursued.

With the registration of a capacity of 3.715 million barrels, Iran has once again strengthened its position in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and solidifies its bargaining power in the global energy market.
