Reliance Industries, owned by Mukesh Ambani, plays a key role in India's return to the Venezuelan oil market with a significant increase in crude oil imports from Venezuela. This company is the largest private oil refiner in India, accounting for over 75% of total crude oil purchases from Venezuela.
Increase in Oil Imports from Venezuela
India's crude oil imports from Venezuela reached 250,000 barrels per day (bpd) in September 2023, with Reliance Industries responsible for 76% of these shipments. This increase follows a U.S. authorization for direct crude oil purchases from Venezuela and a gradual easing of oil sanctions on the country after the arrest of Nicolás Maduro in January 2023. Reliance's Jamnagar refinery is specifically designed to process heavy Venezuelan crude oil, highlighting Reliance's advantage in this market.
Reasons for Increased Imports and Prices
The increase in crude oil imports from Venezuela is due to the competitive prices of this oil compared to other oils, including Russia's Urals crude. Venezuela's flagship crude, Merey, is traded at a discount of about $16 per barrel compared to Brent crude, while Urals crude is sold at a $10 premium. These conditions have encouraged Reliance to boost its imports of Venezuelan crude oil. According to estimates, India may increase its oil imports from Venezuela to over 460,000 barrels per day this month, which, if realized, would be the largest monthly imports from Venezuela since 2019.
In addition to increasing imports of Venezuelan crude oil, Reliance Industries is planning to support the construction of the first new refinery in the United States. In March 2023, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced that a historic agreement for building a refinery in Brownsville, Texas had been signed, although Reliance has yet to confirm the size of its investment.
