India, one of the largest oil importers in the world, is facing a threat of a ١٠٠% tariff on Russian oil and gas. This threat has emerged following the passage of a law in the U.S. House of Representatives, which grants President Donald Trump broad powers to impose sanctions and tariffs.

Russian Oil Imports to India

According to reports, in the fiscal year ٢٠٢٦, Russia supplied ٣٠.٣% of India's crude oil imports, valued at $٤٠.٨ billion out of a total of $١٣٤.٧ billion in India's crude oil imports. In July, Russian crude accounted for more than half of India's imports.

Meanwhile, other crude oil suppliers are significantly behind. The United Arab Emirates accounts for ١٠.٨%, Saudi Arabia for ٩.٦%, and Venezuela for ٦.٣%. In fact, Russia alone supplies more oil to India than the total imports from these six countries combined.

Consequences of the New Tariff

The passage of this law could put significant pressure on India to sign a bilateral trade agreement under one-sided terms. With a population of over ١.٤ billion, India is seeking affordable energy, and these purchases have contributed to the stability of global oil supply and prices. However, with increasing competition for Russian crude oil and rising transportation and insurance risks, the economic situation of Russian oil has drastically changed.

In this context, India has stated that it is "monitoring further developments in this area" and remains committed to "ensuring energy security" for its people. However, if the ١٠٠% tariff becomes a reality, it could have serious implications for India's exports to the United States and affect the trade balance of the country.

This complex situation does not allow India to easily replace Russian crude oil, as large-scale substitution would incur significant costs. Moreover, India's exports to the United States include electronic products, pharmaceuticals, machinery, and petroleum products, and any new tariff could have negative impacts on these sectors.
