India and Ecuador are negotiating to increase the export of Ecuadorian crude oil, copper, and other vital minerals to India. Fernando Buchi, Ecuador's ambassador to India, stated in an interview that Ecuador intends to invite Indian companies to invest in the oil and mining sectors.

Development of Economic Cooperation

Ecuador is also looking to purchase medical products from the state-owned health product manufacturer HLL Lifecare Limited. India, as the third-largest importer of crude oil in the world and a major developer of renewable energy, has been seeking oil and other energy resources from South America in recent years to secure its supply and reduce dependence on China's mineral industry.

Earlier this year, India's largest state-owned refiner, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), purchased its first shipment of crude oil from Ecuador. This move was made to replace part of the Russian crude oil deliveries following U.S. sanctions against major Russian producers like Rosneft and Lukoil.

New Investment Opportunities

In light of the Middle East crisis that has disrupted crude oil supply to India, refiners are looking for additional volumes of crude oil from South America, including Brazil, Venezuela, and Ecuador, to compensate for supply shortages in the Gulf. Ecuador is now providing an opportunity for Indian companies to invest in the oil and vital minerals sectors and further develop crude oil and copper supply.

In South America, India has been collaborating with Argentina to strengthen cooperation in lithium extraction. Last year, India and Argentina signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance relations in the critical minerals sector. This collaboration is expected to accelerate lithium exploration projects, increase resource security, and create new opportunities for Indian companies in the Latin American mining landscape.
