B100 samples registered by ENGINE in Rotterdam reached 77 in the first eight months of 2026, showing a 126 percent increase compared to 34 samples last year. In total, ENGINE registered 342 biodiesel samples in Rotterdam during this period, which is a significant growth compared to 275 samples in the same timeframe in 2025.
Biodiesel Sales Trends in Rotterdam
In the first half of 2026, suppliers in the Port of Rotterdam sold approximately 345,000 tons of biodiesel fuels. ENGINE's data shows that 135,000 tons of these sales, equivalent to 39 percent, were covered by the samples registered by this entity. Some samples were recorded without a quantity, so the actual coverage is slightly higher than this number.
Changes in Biodiesel Market Share
The share of B100 samples from the total biodiesel samples in Rotterdam increased to 23 percent in the first eight months of 2026, compared to 12 percent last year, indicating significant growth. Meanwhile, other grades of biodiesel have decreased their shares; for instance, B30-VLSFO dropped from 37 percent to 28 percent and B30-LSMGO fell from 22 percent to 20 percent. The only other grade that increased its share is B30-ULSFO, which rose from 22 percent to 27 percent.
Rotterdam is currently the largest refueling hub in the world in terms of marine biodiesel volume. This demand has been particularly strengthened by the implementation of the EU's RED III directive in the Netherlands, which makes biodiesel fuels significantly cheaper than in other European ports.
According to Dutch regulations, fuel suppliers in the ports of this country can produce marine emission reduction units called ZRE A tickets by selling low-emission marine fuels. These tickets can be sold to conventional fuel suppliers like VLSFO or LSMGO, who need them to meet their commitments.
The EU carbon trading system and FuelEU Maritime also encourage shipowners to use biodiesel by providing them with tax benefits and reducing compliance penalties. ENGINE's samples indicate that in the first eight months of 2026, 15 biodiesel fuel suppliers were active in Rotterdam, an increase from 10 suppliers last year. The number of B100 suppliers also rose from three to seven.
Dutch fuel supplier Verde Marine Energy made its first B100 delivery in the ARA region in June.
