Hong Kong, as one of the important maritime and financial centers of the world, is preparing to host the tenth edition of Hong Kong Maritime Week (HKMW 2026), which will take place from November 15 to 21, 2026. This event will gather maritime professionals from around the globe to discuss developments related to maritime transport, including changes in trade patterns, geopolitical uncertainties, decarbonization, alternative fuels, and ship financing.
Favorable Legal and Financial Environment
Hong Kong, as the only jurisdiction with a common law system in China, provides a legal and financial environment that supports the free flow of capital, data, and talent. These conditions protect shipowners and institutional investors from market disruptions. The number of ship leasing institutions in the city has increased from 11 in 2020 to 64 in 2024, a success attributed to government tax incentives and deep capital markets for financing marine insurance projects and green technology.

Increase in Maritime Arbitration Cases
In the area of dispute resolution, Hong Kong saw a 56% increase in maritime arbitration cases in 2025. The city is now one of four designated arbitration venues under the standards of the Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) contracts and is recognized as the primary location for disputes related to the People's Republic of China.
Hong Kong's performance has recently shifted towards expanding green marine fuel supply and trade center. For operators facing fluctuations in conventional fuel prices, this center offers cost-effective and practical options to comply with international decarbonization regulations.
