The ammonia carrier Terra Clove, recognized as the largest ammonia carrier in the world, measuring 230 meters in length and 36.5 meters in width, was showcased in Ulsan on October 22. This ship, with a capacity of 93,000 cubic meters, was named in a special ceremony by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.
Details of the Ship and Technologies Used
The Terra Clove is the first of two identical vessels ordered by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries from Singapore-based EPS in 2023. The name of this ship combines the Latin word "Terra," meaning earth, and "Clove," meaning flower bud, reflecting its environmental values. Approximately 110 officials and experts attended the ceremony, including Lee Sang-kyun, Vice Chairman and Head of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Cyril Ducau, CEO of EPS, and Lou Koon Yan, Head of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.
Propulsion System and Transport Capabilities
At the heart of the Terra Clove is the dual ammonia propulsion system. This ship is designed to selectively use conventional marine fuels and ammonia, which is an environmentally friendly fuel, depending on operational conditions. Notably, this vessel includes advanced technologies for natural disaster prevention, including real-time ammonia leak detection devices and an emission reduction system, ensuring safety as the biggest challenge for ammonia carriers.
The transport capability and efficiency of this ship have been maximized. The Terra Clove is equipped with four loading tanks that have been internally designed and constructed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, allowing it to simultaneously transport both ammonia and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) sustainably. Additionally, this ship features a shaft generator that produces electricity using the rotating shaft of the propulsion engine, assisting nitrogen and sulfur reduction systems to enhance its ability to comply with environmental regulations.
With the construction of this ship, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has once again demonstrated its technological superiority in the field of ammonia carriers. In April, the company delivered its first medium-sized ammonia bunkering vessel with a capacity of 46,000 cubic meters.
Lee Sang-kyun stated at the naming ceremony, "We are proud to have built next-generation environmentally friendly vessels in collaboration with EPS," adding, "The construction of the largest ammonia carrier in the world is an important step towards carbon reduction in maritime transport." After final works are completed, the Terra Clove is set to be delivered to its owner EPS in early November.
