The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has announced in its latest assessment that the northern slope of Alaska has 96 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of undiscovered and recoverable natural gas. This amount is significantly greater than the proven gas reserves in the region, which are approximately 35 Tcf.
Importance of Gas Resources in Northern Alaska
Ned Mamula, the director of USGS, stated: "The economy of the United States and our way of life depend on energy, and USGS's natural gas assessments point to resources that the industry has yet to discover. In this case, we estimate that there are significant undiscovered gas resources in the northern slope of Alaska."

Potential for Sustainable Energy
Doug Burgum, the Secretary of the Interior, also emphasized that this estimate highlights the importance of understanding the resources of the northern slope. He stated that Alaska's gas could provide affordable, reliable, and safe energy for Americans and U.S. allies for generations. The Interior Department also announced that this assessment supports Executive Order 14153, which aims to unleash the extraordinary potential of Alaska's resources, signed by President Trump on his first day in office.
These USGS assessments assist land and resource management programs by agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management. The industry also uses these assessments as a background for planning detailed exploration.
