The oil market is heavily influenced by the ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and the Saudi-Houthi clashes. While Brent crude prices have approached around $115 per barrel, tensions in the Persian Gulf have raised serious concerns among market participants.
Increase in Maritime Attacks in the Strait of Hormuz
October 2023 witnessed the highest increase in maritime attacks since the onset of the U.S.-Iran war eight months ago. More than 30 incidents have been recorded in the Strait of Hormuz and its surrounding waters, a significant rise from 14 incidents in September. This increase in attacks clearly indicates the escalation of tensions and targeting of ships and oil tankers in the region.

Impacts on the Market and Prices
Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), the largest oil tankers available, account for 28% of all drone and missile attacks in the Persian Gulf. Given that 32 damaged vessels represent nearly 4% of the global VLCC fleet, this raises concerns about the security of oil transportation. Freight rates from the Persian Gulf remain high, with Saudi voyages to China costing about $33 per barrel. Additionally, demurrage rates (costs incurred due to delays in loading) have risen to one million dollars per day since early August.
The UKMTO organization, which provides maritime security alerts, has recently acknowledged that reporting on maritime attacks has become increasingly difficult due to the tendency of passing ships to avoid drawing attention and charterers' caution regarding rising freight rates.
Other Developments in the Energy Market
In other areas, major energy companies in the United States are looking to expand their operations. For example, U.S. gas producer EQT has signed a $13 billion deal with Range Resources to form the largest gas company in the U.S. This new company, focusing on the Appalachian basin, will have a net production of over 9 billion cubic feet per day.
BP has also entered the second phase of exploration at the Loran gas field in Venezuela and is using the research vessel Fugro Brasilis to conduct final seabed studies. Meanwhile, ExxonMobil has announced a new commercial discovery at the Rockhead-1 exploratory well off the coast of Guyana, with resource estimates between 500 to 600 million barrels.
Challenges Facing the Oil Market
As the U.S. midterm elections approach on November 3, tensions and clashes in the Persian Gulf have reached a peak, and this situation is expected to impact oil prices. Efforts to negotiate and reduce tensions are underway, but the current situation seems likely to exert more pressure on the oil market.
As a result, market participants are closely monitoring the situation, and the continuation of these tensions is expected to have profound effects on prices and global oil supply.
