Equinor and its partners in the Troll gas field announced that they will complete the Troll West Electrification Project (TWEL) without installing a second electric compressor at Troll C. This decision was made to maintain gas production at Troll C, which had raised concerns about reduced production capacity following maximum output in recent years.

Details of the TWEL Project and Its Impacts

According to the Plan for Development and Operation (PDO) of the Troll gas field in 2021, installing a second electric compressor at Troll C would have reduced production from this field for up to 21 months. While this compressor required necessary equipment until the mid-2030s, Equinor decided against its installation. With this change, gas production at the Troll C field will remain at maximum levels. This decision is expected to lead to an additional production of 2.3 billion cubic meters (equivalent to 81 billion cubic feet) of gas for European markets in 2027 and 2028.

Environmental Impacts and the Future of the Troll Field

The TWEL project has helped reduce pollution from the Troll area by 330,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year, which accounts for about 75% of the 440,000 tons per year target set in the PDO. Additionally, the Troll B and Troll C fields were partially electrified in 2024, and the Troll A field has been using offshore electricity since 1996.

Frode Skarstein, Senior Vice President of Exploration and Production West at Equinor, stated that the Troll field will continue to be one of the cornerstones of energy supply for Europe in the coming years. The Troll field is recognized as the largest gas field on Norway's continental shelf, and Equinor manages it with a 30.55% stake, alongside Petoro (55.93%), Shell (8.19%), TotalEnergies (3.69%), and ConocoPhillips (1.64%).
