The Norway Investment Fund, officially known as the Government Pension Fund Global, faced a loss of $30 billion in the third quarter of 2026. This loss occurred due to rising interest rates and market volatility affecting the fund's fixed investments and equities.

Fund Performance Details

The Norway Investment Fund, commonly referred to as the "Norwegian Oil Fund" due to its financing from Norway's oil and gas revenues, holds shares in many large global companies. More than half of the value of the fund's equity investments is in the U.S. market. The fund was established in the 1990s to ensure the long-term management of revenue from Norway's oil and gas resources. Currently, the fund owns an average of 1.5 percent of all publicly listed companies worldwide.

Negative Returns and Related Analyses

The fund's management, Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM), announced that the fund recorded a negative return of 0.5 percent during this period. This negative return is equivalent to 278 billion Norwegian kroner or approximately $29.69 billion in accounting terms. Trond Grande, Deputy CEO of NBIM, stated that the fund's return has been close to zero, and due to rising interest rates, weaker results have been observed in fixed investments. Additionally, equity returns have also been close to zero, but there have been significant differences between sectors. Energy companies saw the most gains, while interest-sensitive sectors such as utilities and real estate declined.

As of September 30, 2026, the total value of the fund reached 22.014 trillion Norwegian kroner, equivalent to $2.35 trillion at current exchange rates. Of this total value, 72.1 percent is invested in equities, 25.8 percent in fixed investments, 1.6 percent in unlisted real estate, and 0.5 percent in unlisted renewable energy infrastructure. The fund's valuable investments include companies like Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft.
